Wisdom Teeth Q & A

Does everyone need to have their wisdom teeth removed?

Your wisdom teeth are your third set of molars in the far back region of your mouth. Although most people have four of them, you may not have all of them, or they might not all protrude through your gums.

For those who do have wisdom teeth, extraction is usually inevitable or becomes necessary if one or more is damaging your other teeth. It’s also possible for a cyst to form around the new teeth, which can cause jaw damage.

Other possible reasons for wisdom teeth removal include:

  • Sinus problems
  • Inflamed gums
  • Cavities
  • Impaction that causes misalignment

Usually, Dr. Shi recommends removing your wisdom teeth to prevent issues in the future, such as:

  • Impaction
  • Lack of room
  • Future misalignment
  • Damage to neighboring teeth
  • Infection

What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that doesn’t have enough room to grow in, so it becomes stuck under your gums. Partially-impacted wisdom teeth don’t have room to come through completely.

An impacted wisdom tooth might not cause any problems, but it’s possible to experience pain or swelling around the tooth. Some people have tender or bleeding gums at the site. You might also experience:

  • Red gums
  • Bad breath
  • Unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth

Why choose Dr. Shi to remove your wisdom teeth?

Dr. Shi uses a non-invasive approach to wisdom tooth extraction. He specifically avoids cutting into the jawbone to remove the tooth. Sometimes he can avoid cutting the gums as well.

For patients who are a little skittish about dental surgery, Dr. Shi can provide nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax.

Dr. Shi also offers a relatively new treatment for complex extractions, using the patient’s blood to help heal the extraction site and regenerate healthy tissue.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is derived from a concentration of your blood platelets in a simplified chairside procedure.  This PRF stimulates the release of essential growth factors during the healing process after your extraction, reducing the healing time after your extraction.

In short, choose Dr. Shi for non-invasive extraction, no anesthesia-related side effects, and quicker healing!

If one or more of your wisdom teeth are trying to tell you it’s time, call or use the online form to schedule an appointment with Dr. Shi at Centre Dental in New York City.
