Dental implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots shaped like screws to serve as an anchor for a new artificial tooth, or crown. The implants are titanium screws Dr. Shi surgically places into the jawbone where teeth are missing.

These metal anchors bond to the bone beneath your jawline, creating a strong foundation for the crowns. Dr. Shi attaches a connector, called an abutment, to the implant, which protrudes through the gums. The abutment then connects to the crown, holding it in place and supported by the implant.

When performed by a trained and experienced dentist like Dr. Shi, dental implant surgery is a safe procedure.

What is involved in a dental implant procedure?

The placement of dental implants usually involves two surgical procedures.

First, Dr. Shi places the implant into your jawbone below the area where the tooth is missing. It takes anywhere between 3-6 months after the procedure for the implants to bond to the gums and bone.

Once the implant has fully bonded with the jawbone, you return to Dr. Shi for a second surgical procedure where he uncovers the implants below your gums and inserts the abutment into the implant.

These small posts protrude through your gums where they’re visible. Your gums now need to heal around these small posts. A temporary cap covers the post to protect it.

Once the gums heal around the metal post, Dr. Shi takes a digital impression of the implants using a state-of-the-art iTero® digital scanner, and your new artificial teeth are made in a laboratory. When Dr. Shi places the artificial teeth, they look and feel like natural ones.

How long does a dental implant procedure take?

Each patient is different. After an initial consultation, Dr. Shi provides you with a treatment plan, including the estimated amount of time to complete the process. Total treatment time depends on your needs, medical and dental history, and your jawbone’s condition. It can be as short as a few months or more than a year for more complex conditions.

Dr. Shi and his team have the experience, technology, and compassion to make your dental implant procedure as successful and painless as possible. Call the downtown Manhattan office, or book an appointment online to regain your smile and confidence.
